CHAPTER TEN

The next morning Aiden woke up with a jolt. He’d been dreaming about his mother, something he rarely did, and even then only in times of extreme stress. It was the same generic dream he always had. They were looking for each other. He could hear her calling his name, and he’d try to call back, but he always woke before they found each other.

In this dream he was usually young. Not quite a child, but not a man, and he always had the intense feeling that she was sad and afraid for him. Her voice always sounded panicked, and it usually took him a while after waking to feel normal.

He hated these dreams about his mother, because it always brought on thoughts of her throughout the following day. What was she doing now? Where did she live? Did she have other children? Did she think of him? Would she have protected him from her own brother? Things that served no purpose at this stage in his life. He assumed maybe his dreams were a manifestation of his hopes about her, that she’d really loved him, but she hadn’t known how to take care of him.

He reached over to the bedside table and picked up his phone. Clicking open a search engine, he typed in two words. Samantha Lang. Several random hits came up. It was too broad. He decided to try Samantha Lang Casper Wyoming. The first link was to the local newspaper. He opened and scanned the page. It was a story about the closing of the office of a local dentist, Dr. Overton. A Samantha Lang was listed as employee. The article was dated about ten years ago.

He clicked back and stared at the screen. Where did he go with that? Social media? He didn’t use it. Paid someone to run a few accounts for Smokey’s because he didn’t have a clue or the desire to learn. He could ask someone else to check, he supposed.

Suddenly curious, he clicked the newspaper again and scrolled through the entire article, reading till the end. Dr. Overton’s office had closed in Casper but the office in the nearby town of Bar Vista would remain open.

He tried searching for her name with Dr. Overton. Another link came up, but it was missing her name. Clicking open the site, he poked around, looking at their contact info, their ABOUT page, and even a photo of the entire staff. He scanned every face, wondering if he’d recognize her if he saw her.

Dropping his arm down to his side on the bed, he stared at the ceiling. This was stupid. A small blue container sat on his dresser. He’d followed his grandmother’s wishes nearly to the letter. Except for this tiny blue urn. He’d asked them to put most of her remains in the regular urn to be placed in the vault next to her husband. The rest Aiden had wanted to keep.

He’d had to pay for it, but he hadn’t minded. Her
